Work Day Information


  • Contact Warden Tim Wilkinson to let him know that you are coming. We need a count, both for transporting volunteers and for lunch.

  • Bird Sanctuary Location
  • Logistics (when and where to show up):
    • Meet at Port O'Connor at Clark's Seafood Restaurant at 7th St. & Intercoastal (see map).
    • Be there before 8:00 a.m. (approximately 2-1/2 hours from Houston). The Audubon boat, the Egret III, leaves at 8:00 a.m. (A smaller boat will coming back to Clark's to pick up additional people at approximately 9:00 a.m.... just in case you have a flat tire or something).
    • It takes about 30 minutes to get to the island.
    • Work from 9:00 AM until about 3:00 PM.
    • Picnic lunch & drinks provided.

  • What to bring:
    • Gloves, work clothes, hat & suntan lotion, tennis shoes, camera, water bottle...and MOSQUITO repellent (the stuff with DEET in it—you know, the deep woods stuff).
    • Wear or bring layered clothing in case it is hot or cold.
    • Rubber boots (not required).
    • Expect to have to wade from the boat to the island.

  • Planned Activities
    • Plant seedlings.
    • Building nesting platforms.
    • Treat for Fire Ants.
    • Work on piping between the windmill and the ponds.
    • Beach cleanup to remove fishing line and other hazards to birds.
