2010 Goals for Audubon's Sundown Island

March 22, 2010

  1. Habitat : maintain and build more habitat including seedlings for more trees for the birds to nest in. Formosa generously works with us planting seedlings all year long.
  2. Erosion : lobby for more natural material to offset erosion.
  3. Windmill: Replace broken windmill and get the ponds filled and ready for a long hot dry summer (completed).
  4. Boat: Upgrade boat for safer, more comfortable transportation for volunteers and visitors (completed; new motor and windshield covers).
  5. Workdays: Hold at least two workdays (Spring Workday completed):
    • beach cleanup
    • tree planting, watering, hoeing, fertilizing, etc.
    • put out fire ant control
  6. Sponsorship: Look for new sponsorship to replace Devon Energy - they are downsizing and don't know if they will be able to continue their Environmental Program on Sundown Island.
  7. Shed: Finish new shed and acquire a trailer to transport material on the island (50% completed).
  8. Water: Get water tanks installed to expand rain water collection system (completed).
  9. Bird Count: Organize bird count (completed).
  10. Continue to enjoy our beautiful birds!

If you are interested in more information about colonial water birds on the Texas coast, also visit Audubon Texas and read about their Coastal Stewardship Program and view the recent Coastal Stewardship Program newsletter (.pdf). Also visit the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: Texas Coastal Program site. This site includes census data on counts going back twenty or more years.
