News on Sundown Island

Workday on Sundown Island, October 14th

Eighteen people turned out on Saturday, October 14th, to donate their time and effort to make Sundown (Bird) Island a better nesting place for thousands of birds.  Under the direction of Warden Chester (Chuck) Smith, of the sanctuary for the Audubon Society, two new nesting platforms were built, approximately 50 new trees were planted, trash was collected from the beach, portions of the island were treated for fire ants, and approximately 2,000 feet of 2 inch plastic pipe, donated by Devon Energy, was connected and run in two segments from the recently installed fresh water well.  Robbie Gregory's Spoonbill Express ferried the work crew and equipment to and from the island.

Recently arrived American Avocets enjoy water pumped by the windmill from the new fresh water well to an inland pond.
