In February, Jane Howard Lee of the Baytown Sun recognized octogenarian Exxon retiree, Chester Smith, for his work on Sundown Island. When speaking to Lee, Chester said "Last year, we counted 1,600 nesting pairs of "brownies" and last year my island and one more in Texas were designated as Important Birding Areas (IBA)." Since 1987 Chester and his wife Ilet have been traveling between Baytown, Texas and Port O'Connor, Texas to oversee the island and coordinate volunteers for conservation activies... Amazing Factoid: At an average of one trip per week to Port O'Connor for twenty three years, Chester and Ilet have driven approximately 445,000 miles—approximately 9,000 hours between Baytown and Port O'Connor.
