Pictured with their award (a glass etched plaque) from left to right are Rebekah Olson, Isaac Olson, Ed and Linda Olson, Chester Smith, Andrew Olson, and Hannah Olson.

An "Outstanding Service on Sundown Island Award" for eight years of service to the bird sanctuary was presented to the Olson Family by Warden Chester Smith. The award was a glass etched plaque with the Sundown Island logo and “For Outstanding Service, The Olson Family, Spring 2003.”

Ed & Linda's family have been building nesting stands for the Pelicans on the islands for many years. During the last workday, they built a large double nesting stand which was completed this Saturday along with a new nesting stand on the North end of the island. For many years, Linda organized and provided the picnic lunch and served the volunteers on workdays. Linda and the kids also led the volunteers in picking up trash that might be harmful to the birds.

Hannah (pictured, far right) was also presented with "Junior Conservationist" award for her service to the Island.  Her award is a paper weight inscribed with the Sundown Island logo, Junior Conservationst, Hannah Olson. Hannah has been involved in many projects at the bird sanctuary.  She has become an expert at planting trees around the various ponds on the island.  The trees will provide nesting habitat for the Herons and similar birds.

The island and the birds that call it home are so much better off because of the Olson family's participation in the Sundown Island workdays. Thank you Ed and Linda and family for your dedication and service to the bird sanctuary.
