Surveying Expedition
September 2001

Chester Smith, Audubon Sundown Island Warden and I (Marcy Crowe, Webmaster) went out to the island with David Studer, Survey Party Chief, Bruce Mickle, Senior Project manager and a survey crew of two from King Fisher Marine Service, Inc.

Jose Silva, Captain of the dredge (Leonard M. Fisher) and Nick Gregg, who wore the GPS backpack, walked around the island and cut through the middle to complete the survey. Chad Black (not pictured) was the survey boat operator.

The purpose of the trip was to survey the boundaries, pipe lines from the windmill, the size of the island increase from dredge fill, and the pond locations on Sundown Island...and to give the Kingfisher crew a chance to try out some new GPS surveying equipment (some really cool stuff!).

The map (at right) is the result of the King Fisher survey

We also toured the dredge barge which was located just north of the island.
